Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Bill Gates was very clear about the future of the Metaverse: By 2023 or 2024 “most” of the online meetings will happen in the Metaverse.
Actually, this is exactly what se stated: “Within the next two or three years, I predict most virtual meetings will move from 2D camera image grids…to the metaverse, a 3D space with digital avatars” -Bill Gates.
He made that statement in his personal blog GatesNots at the end of 2021. He went even further by mentioning: “The idea is that you will eventually use your avatar to meet with people in a virtual space that replicates the feeling of being in an actual room with them. To do this, you’ll need something like VR goggles and motion capture gloves to accurately capture your expressions, body language, and the quality of your voice. Most people don’t own these tools yet, which will slow adoption somewhat.”
One thing that struck me especially was when Bill Gates talks about “2D camera image grids”. You naturally think he’s referring to Zoom, right?
Well, it happens that Microsoft owns a software called Microsoft Teams, so he very well know what he’s talking about when he makes that statement.

It’s precisely that fact that made it, in my eyes, a very strong statement, coming from Bill Gates, no less.
Clearly, Microsoft is determined to ride the Metaverse wave fully, and to jump all in with both feet. Probably he’s still hurt about missing the internet wave, the browsers wave, the search engine wars, and the mobile wave.
Yeah, I know, Microsoft is still a trillion dollar company. But when you play in the highest tech league of all, you can’t miss all the boats in the tech space, in your “home town”.

Microsoft is betting the boat on the metaverse with their Hololens, a rather pricey product starting at $3,500 but their natural target are big businesses that can afford them.
